Houston-based tenor Stephen Ash frequently performs as a soloist in opera, concert, and recital repertoire. Most recently, he made his debut with First Coast Opera as Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance. In the concert hall, Stephen has recently performed solos with Mercury Chamber Orchestra, Ars Lyrica Houston, Harmonia Stellarum, and the Houston Masterworks Chorus. As a recitalist, Stephen specializes in German Lieder, performing major cycles including Dichterliebe and An die ferne Geliebte.
Stephen earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor where he studied music education and voice performance. He earned his Master of Music and DMA degrees from the University of Houston. His doctoral studies focused on the songs of Franz Liszt, of which he is now a seasoned interpreter.
As an educator and scholar, Stephen serves as Dean of Fine Arts for the Second Baptist School University Model school system where he enjoys supporting teachers, encouraging students, and lecturing on aesthetics and philosophy.
Stephen especially enjoys singing with his lovely wife, Justine, who is herself a talented and excellent soprano.
